www.nju.edu.cn

Nanjing University (traditional Chinese: 南京大學; simplified Chinese: 南京大学; pinyin: Nánjīng Dàxué; colloquially 南大, Nándà) is a national comprehensive university located in Nanjing, an ancient capital of China. It is regarded as one of the best and most selective universities in China. Its history dates back to the first year of Yong'an reign (258 CE), making it one of the oldest higher learning institutions in the world. It became a modern Chinese university in the early 1920s.Nanjing University is one of China's key comprehensive universities and it functions directly under the Ministry of Education. It is located in the ancient capital of six dynasties -- Nanjing. The University dates back to 1902 when Sanjiang Normal School was founded, and then evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. On August 8, 1949, the National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950, as required by the Ministry of Education, the name was changed to Nanjing University. In 1952, when a nationwide readjustment of universities took place, some schools, such as the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture, were separated from the University; meanwhile, the University merged with the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sciences of the University of Nanking, which was founded in 1888. The new university remained Nanjing University and the campus of Nanjing University moved from Sipailou to Gulou.

History

Nanjing University's development has always been closely bound with the destiny of the Chinese nation and linked to her ever changing society. Nanjing Higher Normal University, the predecessor of Nanjing University, played a leading role in the area of Nanjing when the Youth Democratic Movement was held on May 4, 1919. In the early 1920s, it was in this university that a group of Chinese communist forerunners introduced the theory of Marxism to the public. The Second National Conference of Chinese Communist Youth League was also held at the University. During the Anti-Japanese War, organizations like the "Natural Sciences Forum" and the "Democracy and Science Forum", headed by Pan Shu, Liang Xi and Jin Baoshan, renowned professors of National Central University, eventually became the democratic party "Jiu San Society." During the Liberation War, teachers and students of National Central University stood at the forefront through out the democratic patriotic movement. On May 20, 1947, students of National Central University initiated an "Anti-Hunger, Anti-Civil War and Anti-Persecution Movement", later known as the "May 20th Patriotic Students Movement." After the National Central University was renamed Nanjing University, the truth-seeking convention was carried forward. In May 1978, one scholar at the Philosophy Department published, in the Guangming Daily, a well-known essay entitled "Practice Is the Sole Criterion for Testing Truth" and thus evoked "a heated discussion on the criterion of truth" that attracted nationwide attention.

In its history of more than 100 years, Nanjing University has cultivated a great number of prominent and learned figures, having thus contributed much to the nation¡¯s revitalization and development. Many famous scientists and scholars, such as Li Ruiqing, Wu Youxun, Zhu Kezhen, Mao Yisheng, Liu Yizheng, Hu Xiaoshi, Tao Xingzhi, Guo Bingwen, Chen Heqin, Tang Yongtong, Ma Yinchu, Li Shutong, Xiong Qinglai, Tong Dizhou, Jin Shanbao, Wen Yiduo, Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Fu Baoshi, Yan Jici, Wu Jianxiong, Li Guoding, Luo Jialun, Gu Yuxiu, Li Fangxun, Wu Mi, Zhu Guangya, Zhao Zhongyao, Pearl S. Fudan University

The Ranking of Fundan University, China

www.fudan.edu.cn

Fudan University (simplified Chinese: 复旦大学; traditional Chinese: 復旦大學; pinyin: Fùdàn Dàxué), located in Shanghai, China, is one of the oldest, most prestigious and most selective universities in the People's Republic of China. Its institutional predecessor was founded in 1905, shortly before the end of China's imperial Qing dynasty. Fudan University is composed of four campuses, including Handan (邯鄲), Fenglin (楓林), Zhangjiang (張江), and Jiangwan (江灣). It is a comprehensive university highly ranked in physical sciences, humanities, social sciences, and medicine.

History

Initially known as Fudan Public School or Fudan College in 1905. The two Chinese characters Fudan (復旦), literally meaning "(heavenly light shines) day after day", were chosen by the distinguished educator in modern Chinese history, Father Ma Xiangbo S.J. (马相伯), from the Confucian Classics (《尚书大传•虞夏传》): "Itinerant as the twilight, sun glows and moon luminesces" (日月光華,旦復旦兮). In 1911 during the Xinhai Revolution the college was taken up as the headquarters of the Guangfu Army and closed down for almost one year. The university motto comes from Analects Book 19.6(《論語•子張》): 博學而篤志,切問而近思, which means "to learn extensively and adhere to aspirations, to inquire earnestly and reflect with self application".

In 1917, Fudan Public School became a private university named the Private Fudan University (私立復旦大學), and also had a middle school and university-preparatory school. In 1929, Fudan adjusted its departments, expanded to include the Journalism Department, Municipals Department, Law Department and Education Department, totalling 17 departments devoted to Arts, Science, Law and Business.

In 1937, Fudan moved with the Kuomintang to the inland city of Beibei, Chongqing, later the temporary capital. On December 25, 1941, the First Meeting of Fifth Conference of the Highest Executive Authority of the National Government of the Republic of China voted to change Fudan University (Chongqing) to a public university with Wu Nanxuan as its president. Fudan University then became National Fudan University (國立復旦大學). Five years later, it moved back to Shanghai.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Fudan lost its "National" appellation and became Fudan University to reflect the fact that all universities under the new socialist state would be public. Fudan was the first university to be adjusted by the new government in 1952 and modelled on Soviet education. The original departments were changed, and Arts and Science departments from at least ten other universities in eastern China were added. This not only added to basic academic offerings of Fudan, but also gathered many talented academics from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Shanghai, including Su Buqing, Chen Jiangong, Tan Jiazhen, and Lu Hefu.

In the 1970s, after the Cultural Revolution, the university was changed to a modern, comprehensive-style university.

Fudan University and Shanghai Medical University were merged on April 27, 2000.

Tsinghua University

The Ranking of Tsinghua University, China

www.tsinghua.edu.cn/eng

Tsinghua University (THU; simplified Chinese: 清华大学; traditional Chinese: 清華大學; pinyin: Qīnghuá Dàxué), is a university in Beijing, People's Republic of China. Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang”. The school was renamed the "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925. The name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928. With the motto of Self-Discipline and Social Commitment and the spirit of Facta Non Verba in Latin, Tsinghua University dedicate itself to the well-being of Chinese society and to world development. Today, most national and international rankings place Tsinghua as one of the best universities in China.

History

The Tsinghua College (清華學堂 Qīnghuá Xuétáng) was established in Beijing, China in 1911 on the site of a former royal garden belonging to a prince, and was funded by the Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship Program which consisted of money from indemnities which China paid the United States after the Boxer Rebellion. It was first a preparatory school for students later sent by the government to study in the United States. The faculty members for sciences were recruited by the YMCA from the United States and its graduates transferred directly to American schools as juniors upon graduation. In 1925, the school established its College Department and started its research institute on Chinese Study.

In 1928, the authority officially changed its name to National Tsing Hua University (NTHU).

During the Second World War in 1937, Tsinghua University along with Peking University and Nankai University, merged to form Changsha Temporary University in Changsha, and later National Southwestern Associated University in Kunming of Yunnan province. After the war, Tsinghua moved back to Beijing and resumed its operation.

After the communist victory at the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949 which led to the creation of the People's Republic of China (PRC), Tsinghua University's President Mei Yi-Qi, followed by some professors, went to Taiwan where they established the National Tsing Hua Institute of Nuclear Technology in 1955, which later became National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan.

The traditional He Tang Yue Se (moonlit pond) is part of the Qing Dynasty Prince's Residence and Garden located at the grounds of the Tsinghua University

In 1952, China government regrouped the country's higher education institutions in an attempt to build a Soviet style system, with individual institutions tending to specialise in a certain field of study. Tsinghua University was disassembled, losing its law school, school of agriculture, school of sciences and humanities, and became a polytechnic engineering university. Even so, Tsinghua University remained in the top tier schools in China. In many years following this regroup, the school was often referred to as the "MIT of China." But since the 1980s, the university began to incorporate a multidisciplinary system. As a result, several schools were built and rebuilt. These included the School of Sciences, School of Business and Management, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Law, School of Public Policy and Management, and the Academy of Arts and Design.

During the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976, the university became a battlefield between different sects of Mao's Red Guards and a stronghold of the radicals. It did not resume its normal operation until 1977 when the Cultural Revolution officially ended.

Since its establishment, the university has enjoyed rich government funding and policy support which greatly improved its facilities. From 1978 Tsinghua re-establishes the departments in sciences, economics, management, and the humanities. Both Tsinghua undergraduate and graduate schools have been recognized nationally, ranking first in the National Evaluation of Graduate Schools.

Today

Most national and international university rankings place Tsinghua as one of the best universities in China. Admission to Tsinghua is extremely competitive. Every year, a vast majority of applicants scoring the highest in the National Entrance Exams (the Chinese equivalent to the American SAT) choose Tsinghua. In 2003, 215 out of 300 students who scored the top 10 in the 30 tested provinces and regions chose Tsinghua and 28 of the 30 top scorers in each province and region chose the university. The majority of selected students are national scholars and among the brightest high school graduates in the country. Admissions to its graduate schools are also daunting by any measure. For instance, only 16% of MBA applicants are admitted; making admissions more competitive than MIT's MBA at 20% and tying with the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton MBA program. The current Chinese president, Hu Jintao, is a former Tsinghua student who graduated with a degree in hydraulic engineering in 1964. The University's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology is on a separate campus in a northern suburb of Beijing.

Tsinghua has a reputation for having some of the most distinguished guest speakers of any university in the world, with public figures such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger, Carlos Ghosn, Henry Paulson etc, as guest speakers at the university.

As of 2003, Tsinghua University had 12 colleges and 48 departments, 41 research institutes, 35 research centers, and 167 laboratories, including 15 national key laboratories. In September 2006, Peking Union Medical College was renamed to Peking Union Medical College, Tsinghua University. The university offers 51 bachelor's degree programs, 139 master's degree programs and 107 Ph.D. programs. Recently, Tsinghua has become the first Chinese university to offer a Master of Laws program in American law, through a cooperative venture with the Temple University Beasley School of Law. The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia. Each year, the University celebrates the Intellectual Property Summer Institute in cooperation with Franklin Pierce Law Center of Concord, New Hampshire. It has its own editorial, Tsinghua University Press.

Campus

The campus of Tsinghua University is located in northwest Beijing, in the Haidian district which was designated for universities and other academic institutes.

It is located on the former site of Qing Dynasty royal gardens and retains Chinese-style landscaping as well as some traditional buildings, but many of its buildings are also in the Western-style, reflecting the American influence in its history[citation needed]. Along with its rival the Peking University, it is known throughout China for having one of the most beautiful campuses.

The university's architect T. Chuang, a 1914 graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, modeled his designs for the quadrangle and auditorium of Tsinghua on the Illinois campus, specifically imitating Foellinger Auditorium, located on the quad at the University of Illinois. The University's Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology is on a separate campus in a northern suburb of Beijing.

School of Economics and Management

The Tsinghua School of Economics and Management (SEM) is consistently ranked first among business schools in China.[14] It is currently the only mainland Chinese institution outside of Hong Kong to have achieved the prestigious AACSB and EQUIS accreditations for its business and accounting programs. Founded in 1984, SEM was the first economics and management school in China. Its Founding Dean, Professor ZHU Rongji, later became the fifth Premier of the People’s Republic of China. SEM is now among the premier business schools in Asia and enjoys world-class faculty, students, and research centers. It is the successor to Tsinghua University's Department of Economics, which was established in 1926. Since then, the school has built a powerful and influential alumni network. SEM has the largest student-exchange program in China (with more than 50 world-class business schools), and also maintains strong relationships with both domestic and multinational corporations.

SEM's International MBA program is one of the most prestigious such programs in the People's Republic of China. The entirely English program is offered in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management. The school provides more than 100 MBA courses per year. Upon finishing their required courses, students can select from curricula of different tracks (enterprise management, finance and banking, enterprise innovation and management, accounting analysis and management control, e-commerce, international business administration, etc.). After two years of business and leadership education, students obtain a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Tsinghua University as well as both a certificate from the MIT Sloan School of Management and MIT Sloan affiliate alumni status. Besides the M.I.T.-Tsinghua International MBA program, international students with Chinese-language skills can also choose to apply to the full-time MBA and the part-time MBA.

SEM also offers an EMBA program in partnership with INSEAD. The Tsinghua-INSEAD Dual Degree Executive MBA program was initiated in 2006, and is the first program of its kind in China combining international business education with a focus on Asia. The program’s first class was opened in the summer of 2007. It targets highly motivated, internationally minded managers with substantial business experience. The program is taught jointly by the two schools’ faculties and focuses on developing the participants’ leadership skills, building their global mindsets, and honing their managerial talents. It combines the analytical rigor of an MBA with the managerial relevance of executive education. Upon successful completion of the program, participants are awarded two prestigious degrees: an EMBA degree by Tsinghua University and an MBA for Executives degree by INSEAD. Graduates become alumni of the two schools

Besides excellent professional programs like the MBA, SEM offers strong academic programs in a variety of disciplines. There are 8 majors in SEM, namely: management science and engineering, finance, economics, accounting, corporation strategy and policy, marketing, human resources management, and technology economics and management. The school also operates a number of prominent research centers, including: the Research Center for Contemporary Management, the Research Center for Technological Innovation, the National Entrepreneurship Research Center, the China Center for Financial Research, the National Center for Economic Research, the China Retail Research Center, the China Business Research Center, the Center for China in the World Economy, the Research Center for Contemporary Management and Technological Innovation, and the China Insurance and Risk Management Research Center.

Today both SEM's professional and academic programs are considered the premier training ground for China's business leaders, and SEM is one of three elite Chinese business schools gaining international recognition.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University

The Ranking of Shanghai Jiao Tong University

www.sjtu.edu.cn

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (simplified Chinese: 上海交通大学; traditional Chinese: 上海交通大學; pinyin: Shànghǎi Jiāotōng Dàxué; abbreviated Jiao Da (交大) or SJTU), located in Shanghai, is one of the oldest and most influential universities in China. The university is under the jurisdiction of both the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Government.

History

In 1896, Nanyang Public School was founded in Shanghai by an imperial edict issued by Guangxu Emperor, under the Business and Telegraphs Office of the imperial government. Four schools were established: the normal school, school of foreign studies, middle school and a high school. Sheng Xuanhuai, the proposer of the edict, became the first president and was regarded as the founder of the university.

In 1904, the Ministry of Commerce took over the school and changed its name to Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry a year later. In 1906, the college went under the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs and changed its name to Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. When the Republic of China was founded, the college was run by the Ministry of Communications and changed its name once again to Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In 1918, the republic government founded the School of Management and it became one of the oldest academic institutes.

In 1920, the institute merged with two other colleges and changed its name to Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung. In the 1930s, it was known as the "Eastern MIT" due to its reputation of nurturing top engineers. In 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the university and renamed it National Chiao Tung University (the separate institution of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, is still known by name). In 1943, the graduate school was founded.

At the end of the Chinese Civil War, in 1952, the new Communist government adopted a policy of creating Soviet-style specialized schools. Under this policy, some faculties of the university were incorporated into other universities. At the same time, engineering faculties from outside were absorbed to create a specialized engineering university. A bigger rearrangement came in 1956 for the school when the national government decided strategically to send a significant amount of its faculties to Xi'an to help create another top engineering school - Xi'an Jiaotong University in western Chinese province Shaanxi. Afterwards, the school was officially renamed Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Shanghai Second Medical University was merged into Shanghai Jiao Tong University on July 18, 2005, under the name Medical School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Today

Ever since its foundation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University enjoyed the reputation as a leading institution of research and higher education in China.

At present, the university comprises 20 academic schools, two directly affiliated departments and one graduate school. It also has a School of Continuing (adult) Education, School of Online Learning, School of International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 179 master-degree programs, 6 professional master-degree programs, 22 disciplines and 143 sub-disciplines authorized to confer Ph.D degrees, 23 post-doctorate programs, 22 state key doctorate programs and six state key laboratories and four national engineering centers. Its total enrollment of full-time students amounts over 38,000. There are 19,432 undergraduates, 13,628 candidates for Master's Degree and Doctor's Degree and 2,080 foreign students.

The university has more than 1,420 professors and associate professors, including 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 20 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, seven chief scientists of the national 973 project and 31 "Cheung Kong Scholars". More than 100 famous scientists and specialists as honorable professors or consulting professors, including the physicists and Nobel prize winners Yang Zhenning, Tsung-Dao Lee and Ding Zhaozhong have been invited.

Campus

The previous main campus was located in Xuhui District of Shanghai, formerly a largely Catholic area and a site of several educational institutions. Nowadays, the economic boom makes the Xuhui campus a garden surrounded by skyscrapers.

Most buildings on campus were influenced by American architecture, while the main gate, which was built in 1935, is of traditional Chinese style reflecting the University's earlier status as the "Imperial Polytechnic College". The approaches to the main gate were via a series of marble bridges, similar to, although smaller than, those built in front of Tiananmen. However, recent road expansions have demolished the river as well as most of bridges. A copy of this famous gate scene have been built on the east of Minhang campus.

International Academic Exchange

SJTU has been actively involved in International academic exchange programs with foreign universities. To date, it has established relations with more than 100 renowned universities and colleges in the world as well as connections with many research institutions, corporations and enterprises at home and abroad. SJTU has invited more than 100 famous scientists and specialists as honorable professors or consulting professors, including the Nobel prize winners and physicists Yang Zhenning, Li Zhengdao and Ding Zaozhong. SJTU sends excellent teachers and students abroad every year to give lectures, to study or to attend international academic conferences, meanwhile SJTU invites foreign specialists and scholars to give lectures or to have academic exchanges. SJTU is the nodal point of "China Education Science and Research Networks" in east China region, and through computer networks, SJTU has faster and closer connection with universities, scientific research institutions and corporations both at home and abroad.

Academic Reputation

Since 2003, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has produced the Academic Ranking of World Universities which analyses the top universities in the world on quality of faculty (40%), research output (40%), quality of education (10%) and performance vs. size (10%). Its ranking is exclusively of research, mainly in the empirical sciences.

Academic Schools

Today SJTU boasts 20 academic schools: the schools of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Mechanical & Power Engineering, Electronics & Electric Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Sciences, Life Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Science, Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Management , International and Public Affairs, Foreign Languages, Agriculture and Biology, Environmental Science and Engineering , Pharmaceutics, Medical, Law, Media & Design, Micro-electronics, Information Security, Software and 2 directly affiliated departments: Department of Plastic Technology and the Department of Physical Education, plus a Graduate School. Besides, it also has School of Continuing(adult) Education, School of Online Learning, School of International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 152 masters-degree programs, 93 Ph.D programs, 16 post-doctorate programs, 16 State key doctorate programs and 14 State key laboratories and National engineering centers.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was ranked 144th in the 2008 THES-QS World University Ranking.

Peking University

The Ranking of Peking University

http://en.pku.edu.cn

Peking University (PKU) is the first national university in Chinese modern history, with a high reputation in and outside China , owing to the abundant teaching resources and outstanding research level.

History

Peking University was established in Beijing in December 1898 during the Hundred Days Reform and was originally known as the Imperial Capital University to replace the ancient Guozijian. In 1902, the Imperial Capital University's Faculty of Education was spun off to become today's Beijing Normal University, the best teacher's college in China. In 1912, following the Xinhai Revolution, the Imperial University was renamed the National Peking University. The famous scholar Cai Yuanpei was appointed president on January 4, 1917, and helped transform the university into the country's largest institution of higher learning, with 14 departments and an enrollment of more than 2,000 students.

Cai, inspired by the German model of academic freedom, recruited an intellectually diverse faculty that included Hu Shi, Chen Duxiu, and Lu Xun. In 1919, students of Peking University formed the bulk of the protesters of the May Fourth Movement. Efforts by the Beiyang government to end to protests by sealing off the Peking University campus led to Cai's resignation. In 1920, Peking University became the second Chinese university to accept female students, after Nanjing University.

After the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937 (and the resulting expansion of Japanese territorial control in east China), Peking University moved to Changsha and formed the Changsha Temporary University along with Tsinghua University and Nankai University. In 1938, the three schools moved again, this time to Kunming, and formed the National Southwestern United University. In 1946, after World War II, Peking University moved back to Beijing. At that time, the university comprised six schools (Arts, Science, Law, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture), and a research institute for humanities. The total student enrollment grew up to 3,000.

In 1952, three years after the People's Republic of China was established, the Yenching University was merged into Peking University and Peking University lost its "national" appellation to reflect the fact that all universities under the new socialist state would be public. In 1952 Peking University moved from downtown Beijing to the former Yenching campus. The first disturbances of the Cultural Revolution began at Peking University in 1966; education there ceased between 1966 and 1970. Since then, the university has reasserted its position as one of the leading universities of China.

In 2000, Beijing Medical University was merged into Peking University and became the Peking University Health Science Campus. Beida now has eight affiliated hospitals and 12 teaching hospitals. In 2001, Peking University set up a satellite campus in Shenzhen. The university's second business school opened its door on this campus in 2004, and was renamed Beida HSBC School of Business in 2008.
