Cambodia released Sivarak Chutipong, who was sentenced to seven years in prison for spying, on Monday morning.

Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen handed a document granting a royal pardon to Mr Sivarak, who was formally pardoned by King Norodom Sihamoni on Friday.

The ceremony to release Mr Sivarak from a prison in Phnom Penh was held at 9am.

The document reportedly said the Cambodian prime minister had earlier tried to provide Mr Sivarak with assistance but because his offence was clear the case had to go through Cambodia's justice system.

Mr Sivarak's mother, his brother and a few MPs from the Puea Thai Party attended the ceremony. Fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who has arrived back in Phnom Penh, was not present.
