Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh will send a letter to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen asking that he help expedite processing of the request by convicted Thai engineer Sivarak Chutipong for a royal pardon, Noppadon Pattama said on Wednesday.
The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday sentenced Mr Sivarak, an employee of Cambodian Air Traffic Service, to seven years in jail and a fine of 10 million riel (about 82,500 baht) for supplying information about former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's flights to the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.
Mr Noppadon, a legal adviser of Thaksin, said the Puea Thai Party was awaiting a copy of the court verdict and a letter of intent to seek a royal pardon from Sivarak's mother Simarak na Nakhon Phanom.
On receiving the letter of intent, Puea Thai would send it along with Gen Chavalit's letter to Hun Sen. Gen Chavalit would use his personal relationship with the Cambodian prime minister to help expedite the process of seeking a royal pardon, he said.
Mr Noppadon said that under Cambodian law only members of Sivarak's family could apply for a royal pardon.
The Foreign Ministry should therefore not try to get involved in this process, since it was also clear that Hun Sen was not on good terms with the Thai government.
Any attempt to speed up the process could be made only through personal contacts with the Cambodian leadership, Mr Noppadon said.
He could not say when Sivarak would be freed, but was confident relations between Puea Thai and Hun Sen would soon win his freedom.
