Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has signed a letter to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen asking that he help expedite processing of the request by convicted Thai engineer Sivarak Chutipong for a royal pardon, Gen Chavalit's close associate, Maj-Gen Sornchai Montriwat, said on Thursday.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday sentenced Mr Sivarak, an employee of Cambodian Air Traffic Service (CATS), to seven years in jail and a fine of 10 million riel (about 82,500 baht) for supplying information about former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's flights to the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.

Maj-Gen Sornchai said the letter should be delivered to Phnom Penh within this week.

"I believe things will go smoothly and no problems will occur, thanks to the close ties between Gen Chavalit and Prime Minister Hun Sen," Maj-Gen Sornchai said.

Noppadon Pattama, a legal adviser of Thaksin, said on Wednesday that the Puea Thai Party was awaiting a copy of the court verdict and a letter of intent to seek a royal pardon from Sivarak's mother Simarak na Nakhon Phanom.

On receiving the letter of intent, Puea Thai would send it along with Gen Chavalit's letter to Hun Sen. Gen Chavalit would use his personal relationship with the Cambodian prime minister to help expedite the process of seeking a royal pardon, he said.
