Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has instructed the Foreign Ministry to coordinate with Cambodia to seek permission for a visit to Siwarak Chotphong, the Thai engineer who was arrested on spying charges, as soon as possible, according to Chavanont Intarakomalsut, secretary to the foreign minister.

"The prime minister wants the visit to be made as soon as today. If the request for a visit is denied, Cambodia must have good reasoning," Mr Chavanont said.

Mr Chavanont said Cambodia had assured that Mr Siwarak was still safe. Officials of the Consular Affairs Department had contact his relatives and told them the Foreign Ministry would do the best it could to help Mr Siwarak.

On Puea Thai MPs' remark that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra would visit Cambodia more frequently, Mr Chavanont said Thailand would request for his extradition whenever he did so.

On former foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai's suggestion for the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia to hold talks, he said the Foreign Ministry welcomed his advice but this would depend on whether Cambodia would cooperate.
